Concern over low priority to mental health

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 4. "Mental health is still not a priority and the attitude of the Government can be gauged from the fact that the budget allocation for mental health care is less that one per cent of the total health budget,'' said Abdul Mabood, director of Snehi, an organisation for psycho-social support and mental health care, at a press conference called to commemorate its 10 years' work in the field.

Pointing out that the Mental Health Act was also being misused by people he said: "There are cases where sane elderly people have been put in mental asylums to get rid of them and the Act is also being grossly misused to seek divorce. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, mental and behavioural disorders in children and adolescents in India are common and increasing alarmingly. In the past nine years, we have reached out to more than 50,000 children and young people in distress through various programmes and found that a majority of them were suffering from moderate to severe mental and behavioural disorders,'' explained Mr. Mabood.

Giving an insight into the various plans and objectives of the organisation, the director explained that they were looking at setting up Crisis Intervention Centre and Counselling Centre to help people suffering from stress, depression and suicidal tendencies and set up clinics, trauma centres for people with mental illness and those coming in with complaints of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. "We also plan to set up other centres including rehabilitation centre for mentally ill people and a child and adolescent guidance centre and clinic,'' said Mr. Mabood.
