NEW DELHI, FEB. 4. The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) today came to the rescue of the over 5,000 chemists operating in the Capital who were affected following a recent High Court order asking chemists operating in residential premises to shut shop. Stating that the situation had been "misunderstood and misinterpreted'' under the latest rule, the chairman of the Nursing Home and Medical Establishment Forum, Prem Aggarwal, said: "When the law allows nursing homes and hospitals in residential areas, how can chemists be asked to shift base and that too without even providing them with an alternative place to do business. We will be going in for an appeal and will ask for a more humane approach to the entire problem.'' Stating that shifting of chemists shops would hurt the common man in case of an emergency, he added: "As per the Master Plan, chemists shops belong to public and semi-public category and while hospitals are allowed in residential areas, the decision we believe is highly discriminatory. Also, chemist shops are an integral part of the hospital and should be allowed in residential area. We are deeply concerned over the recent directions of the High Court that forbids chemist shops in residential areas". The DMA has then decided to appeal against the order in the Apex Court. For the time being, it has requested the Delhi Government not to take penal action against any chemist shop.
