NEW DELHI, FEB. 4. The Central Administrative Tribunal Bar Association has condemned the Union Government's proposed move to withdraw the contempt powers of CAT to hand down punishment for non-implementation of its orders. A resolution passed by the Bar Association, presided over by Arun Bhardwaj, said the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, would be weakening the judiciary by falling into the trap of his bureaucrats who had advised him to take away the contempt powers of CAT. The resolution said that the proposal was against the independence of the judiciary and would hamper speedy disposal of the cases of Central Government servants across the country. Condemning this move, it wanted the Government to reconsider its decision.
