Cardinal to stand in for Pope

ROME: An American Cardinal will stand in for Pope John Paul II at next week's Ash Wednesday prayer service, the Vatican said on Saturday as 100 leaders from different branches of Christianity gathered in the chapel of the hospital treating the pope to pray for his recovery. The clerics, who included Roman Catholic bishops as well as Orthodox and Lutheran ministers, were in Rome for the 37th anniversary of a Catholic aid organisation but headed to Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic hospital to show their support for the frail, 84-year-old Pope. John Paul's fourth night in the hospital passed calmly, Vatican radio reported on Saturday. The Vatican announced that Cardinal James Stafford will preside in the name of the Pope at an Ash Wednesday prayer service in St. Peter's Basilica. — AP
