KOLKATA, FEB. 5. Roma, businessman Satyanaryan Jhawar's college-going daughter, was restored to her parents early today after a ransom was allegedly paid to the abductors. Chayan Mukherjee, Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order), however, denied the payment of any ransom. He said the abductors had initially demanded Rs. 50 lakhs for Ms. Roma's freedom but later brought it down to Rs. 20 lakhs. Reports suggest that the girl's elder brother, Rajesh, sneaked out of the house after Roma's father received a call from the kidnappers at 11 p.m. The money changed hands somewhere in north Kolkata. Roma was kidnapped on Friday from the Salt Lake area by four young men at gunpoint while on her way to college in her car. Her 10-year-old nephew and a friend were with her. According to police, the girl was traced in a dazed state last night in a garage in north Kolkata where the kidnappers had abandoned her in the face of a massive police operation.
Two held
Police have arrested two young men. Both of them are reportedly known to Roma one of them is even listed in Roma's mobile. It is also believed that Roma brought her "sim card" from the other. Roma's abduction from the well-heeled Salt Lake, a satellite town near Kolkata, sent shock waves as its residents include Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister, Ashim Dasgupta, Finance Minister, other prominent CPI(M) functionaries as well as businessmen. Mr. Basu said the incident was an isolated one and did not indicate that law and order had collapsed in the State.
