Let Rane prove majority: Parrikar

PANAJI, FEB. 5. The dismissed Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar, today demanded that the Governor, S.C. Jamir, summon the House immediately so that the new Chief Minister, Pratapsinh Rane, could prove his majority.

Talking to the media with the State Bharatiya Janata Party president, Rajendra Arlekar, at the party headquarters here, Mr. Parrikar said the new Cabinet should not take any decisions that had a bearing on the State before Mr. Rane proved his majority.

The Chief Minister should also distribute portfolios and ask the Governor to hold the session at the earliest. "The Governor who gave [a] short time to us to prove [our] majority should not give enough time to Mr. Rane," they said.

The BJP leaders also took exception to Mr. Rane's decision to shift the Ministers' offices from the new Secretariat in Porvorim to the old Secretariat complex in Panaji.

Protests

The BJP general secretary, Pramod Mahajan, would lead the demonstrations in Goa on February 8 as part of a nation-wide agitation, with the slogan "Desh bachao, Jamir Hatao (Save the nation, remove Jamir)." — UNI
