Recanalisation proposed for 16 couples

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 5. The Health department plans to reverse the family planning operation, adopting the recanalisation procedure, for 16 couples, who lost all children or have only one left after the December 26 tsunami strike.

A release from the office of the Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, said here today that the department, during a survey in tsunami-hit villages, found that five of the 16 couples (13 from Karaikal and 3 from Pondicherry) who underwent sterilisation lost all children. Each of the remaining couples was left with only one child.

Health staff conducted the first phase of counselling in Karaikal on February 3.

The Medical Superintendent of Maternity hospital here, T.B. Kasthuri, and the Deputy Director of Family Welfare and Maternal and Child Health conducted the counselling.

The operation would be arranged in the maternity hospital here soon, the release said.

Check-ups for 57,500 people were conducted. It was found that they were suffered from psychological problems. With a view to relieve them of trauma, counsellors trained by the Psychiatry department in JIPMER here would visit the villages and conduct group counselling.
