PONDICHERRY, FEB. 5. The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) will soon become an autonomous institution on the lines of AIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh, according to A. Rajasekaran, president, National Board of Examination. Delivering the convocation address at JIPMER today, Professor Rajasekaran said the Union Health Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss, had taken up the issue and a bill may be introduced in the next session of Parliament itself. He said thanks to the efforts of the Minister many posts in JIPMER had been revived and posts created. Addressing the passing-out 70 MBBS and 19 B.Sc. (Medical Lab Technician) graduates, he said as medical personnel they were second to none. "Do not compare yourself with IT professionals and despair. In the days ahead you will shine in your field and serve society to the best of your knowledge." "In the present scenario where advances in science have lead to expensive technology thereby depriving a majority of the population of quality medical care, compassion and not cold and impersonal science should be your tool," he said, adding that medicine without compassion and care was unacceptable. He urged the students to emulate their teachers, who had won many national honours through sheer hard work and sincerity of purpose. Prof. Rajasekaran presented scrolls and medals to the students. The JIPMER director, K.S.V.K Subba Rao, in his address said that about 4,000 patients from Pondicherry and other parts of the country attended their outpatient department everyday.
