Suryanelli: Stree Vedi urges State to file appeal

KOCHI, FEB. 5. A meeting convened by the Kerala Stree Vedi here on Saturday has demanded that the State Government file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the verdict of the Kerala High Court in the Suryanelli sex-scandal case.

The meeting also decided to extend support to the victim in the scandal for filing an appeal in the Supreme Court. An advisory committee, headed by P. Geetha, was formed in this regard. Sub-committees had also been formed, with the activist K. Ajitha heading the one on finance, the lawyer Bhadrakumari the legal panel and Jeeva the media panel. The sub-committees will coordinate the steps needed to muster funds for filing the appeal, handling clerical work and ensuring media support.

Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Ajitha demanded that justice be ensured for the victim. It was the responsibility of society, she added.

The Communist Party of India leader Meenakshi Thampan; the writer Sara Joseph; the All India Youth Front State unit general secretary, V.S. Sunilkumar; and P.A. Pouran of the People's Union for Civil Liberties; spoke. A public meeting was held at the High Court junction.
