Haryana buys extra power for rabi crop

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, FEB.5. Haryana Power Utilities have been able to sustain rabi crop by mobilising extra power in spite of an extremely poor winter rainfall. The entire North India has been facing an acute power shortage due to inadequate rain clubbed with a poor monsoon during the kharif season and consequent lower discharges into the irrigation canal system and exceptionally low power availability from hydel sources. The grid frequency has been ranging between 49.0-49.5 Hz against the required 50 Hz.

Disclosing this here today, senior officers of Haryana Power Utilities said they had taken advance action to tie up extra power to the extent of 30-35 lakh units a day in anticipation of the power shortage during the rabi season. In spite of such power being costlier than the usual sources, Haryana is buying power from far-flung States like Tripura, Meghalaya and West Bengal in addition to the nearby sources like Delhi and Maruti Udyog at Gurgaon.

They added that last month the rural sector was supplied on an average of 269 lakh units a day compared to 257 lakh units last year - that is, nearly five per cent more power. This level of power supply is in spite of the fact that Haryana is getting 30 per cent lesser power from Bhakra-Beas Complex. The irrigation canals are carrying nearly 50 per cent of the releases compared to last year.
