SHIMLA, FEB. 5. The piercing cold wave gripping the mid and higher hills of Himachal Pradesh continued unabated today as the entire tribal belt and other higher reaches experienced intermittent snowfall since yesterday while the adjoining mid-hills were lashed by strong icy winds accompanied by snowflakes and drizzle. The people in the higher hills shivered under sub-zero temperature while the minimum temperature in Shimla and other mid-hills hovered around the freezing point. The capital recorded the minimum temperature at 1.6 degree Celsius while Mashobra reeled under severe cold wave with mercury dipping to minus 1.2 degree Celsius. The famous tourist resort of Manali had snowflakes while Solang, Palchang, Dhundhi and Rohtang Pass had 10 cm to 30 cm of fresh snowfall. The minimum temperature at Kalpa in Kinnaur district dipped to minus 6.7 degree C after the region had 10 cm of fresh snowfall. The sky remained heavily overcast in Shimla and strong velocity icy winds swept the region. The town had snowflakes while Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda had mild snowfall. The Pir Panjal ranges in Pangi area of Chamba district were experiencing heavy snowfall since early this morning while Pangi, Lahaul and Spiti valleys had 10 cm to 15 cm of snow. Minimum temperature stayed between minus 17 and minus 28 degree C in the tribal valleys, badly hitting normal life. The sprawling Dhauladhar ranges in Kangra and Churdhar ranges in Sirmaur district also experienced heavy snowfall while Dharamsala and adjoining areas were lashed by intermittent showers. Night colder in several States Nigh temperatures were appreciably below normal in Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and were below normal in Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, West Madhya Pradesh, south Gujarat and north Madhya Maharashtra. They were appreciably to markedly above normal in Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh and were above normal in south Madhya Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Night temperatures were appreciably to markedly above normal in Rajasthan. They were normal over the rest of the country. Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and at isolated places in Uttaranchal, Haryana, west Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar.
