Power crisis continues

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 5. Though the demand for power was far less on Saturday compared to Friday, a shortfall in electricity supply affected many parts of the Capital. The private power distribution companies had to resort to 250 MW of loadshedding, while the day's peak demand stood at 2,910 MW.

Low frequency in the Northern Grid was the major reason behind the shortfall in electricity supply, while Delhi's three power generating units -- one 30 MW unit of Gas Turbine power plant and two units of 62.5 MW each of the Indraprastha power plant -- remained shut on Saturday also. For the past three weeks, the three units have remained shut due to "technical reasons".

Generation in hydropower plants has been affected this winter due to a poor monsoon leading to shortfall in supply, while Delhi-based Northern Region Load Dispatch Centre has been ensuring that the Northern Grid "discipline" is maintained so that the ongoing power crisis is not aggravated further.

The areas affected on Saturday included Mangolpuri, Jehangirpuri, Najafgarh, Sultanpuri, Shakarpur, Bindapur, Uttam Nagar, Jafarpur, Okhla, Karawal Nagar, Dwarkapuri, Shahdara, Sangam Vihar, Ambedkar Nagar, Tughlakhabad, Jamia, Ghonda, Nandnagri, Palam, Mahipalpur, Kalkaji, Ashok Vihar, Nangloi, Narela, Seelampur, Okhla, Pappan Kalan, Bijwasan and Dilshad Garden.

Meanwhile, the private power distribution company -- BSES -- has informed that on Sunday, Nehru Place and IP Estate and adjoining areas will face power cut during the day due to maintenance work. Similarly, on Monday, areas like Rama Road, Moti Nagar, Jhakira, Karampura, Najafgarh Road, Vinobha Puri, Lajpat Nagar II, Okhla Phase I, Khanpur, Tigri, Devli and Sangam Vihar will also have to face power cuts during the day.
