NEW DELHI, FEB. 5. A large number of journalists under the banner of the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) today took out a protest march to the Nepalese Embassy here in the Capital, calling for an end to press censorship and press bashing in the Himalayan Kingdom.

Carrying placards saying "No To Press Censorship" and "Raja Ka Raj" the protesters called for restoration to democracy in Nepal.

A unanimous resolution passed at the meeting organised near the gates of the Nepalese Embassy said: "This emergency protest meeting called by the DUJ expresses its grave concern at the recent development in Nepal. With the assumption of direct political power by the King, all civil liberties have been suspended and a reign of terror has been let loose on the people. The DUJ is particularly concerned at the attempt to muzzle the press. Newspaper editors have been called by the Palace and told not to publish anything critical of the regime."

The resolution further added: "Army officers have taken over newspaper offices with a view to threatening newspersons. Not only has censorship been imposed, communication channels have also been severed."

A number of prominent editors and senior journalists were signatories to the resolution.
