Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, FEB. 5. What will you do if you get a bill with a rider - pay up to date to avoid disconnection? Of course, one will immediately try to settle it. But in Mohan Prasad's case, the matter was not so simple. The bill he got from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) in October 2004 was blank. Except for the `warning,' nothing was legible. The retired official, however, did not keep quiet. He made several trips to the board office to get a proper bill. But he failed to get one. At last he paid the bill on the basis of previous month's charges at an eSeva centre. Mr. Prasad did not stop at that, but filed a complaint before the Lok Adalat of the water board.
It was a `faulty' bill
When the issue came up before the Lok Adalat on Saturday, the judge, K. Satyanaryana, examined the water bill and agreed that it was faulty. The board's General Manager (Finance), Ravinder Reddy, accepted that there was a mistake and promised to initiate action against the person who generated the blank bill. The apologies were fine but what about the mental agony he suffered, Mr. Prasad sought to know. In spite of being a senior citizen he had been pursuing the case for the last four months and now he wanted his pound of flesh.
`Supply two tankers'
As the judge and board officials held their breath, Mr. Prasad said he did not want any cash as compensation. "All I want is two water tankers to be supplied to my house," he said. Board officials quickly checked and said Basheerbagh where he lived was a water supply area and therefore tankers could not be supplied freely. Mr. Prasad had to quench his thirst with compliments from the judge for being a conscious citizen.
