Son succeeds Togo President

LOME (Togo): The President of Togo, Africa's longest-ruling leader, died unexpectedly on Saturday, and was replaced hours later by his son as the West African nation's new head of state, military officials said. President Gnassingbe Eyadema (in the picture), suffered a heart attack early on Saturday in his hometown of Piya in southeastern Togo and later died, said an official. The Prime Minister, Koffi Sama, confirmed the death on state radio and said Mr. Eyadema (69) died on his way to Europe for treatment of the heart attack. Mr. Sama called upon the security forces to keep law and order. State TV broadcast images later showed the top military brass, including Army Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Zakari Nandja, swearing an oath of allegiance to Faure Gnassingbe, Mr. Eyadema's son, as ``the acting President.'' — AP
