This Day That Age
Four Communist ships were sunk by Nationalist bombers off the Chekiang coast, north of Formosa, early on February 5, the Chinese Nationalist Air Force announced in Taipeh. Two other Communist ships were reported damaged. The announcement did not say what type of ships were hit. It said the bombers flew over the beleaguered Tachen Islands, the Nationalists stronghold off the Chekiang coast. The Peking forces had recently captured the Tachen Islands. In London, the Prime Ministers of India and Canada spent 90 minutes in highly secret discussions on the Formosa crisis with Sir Anthony Eden, Britain's Foreign Secretary. So close was the veil of official secrecy over the meeting that Foreign Office officials would not even admit knowledge of it until it was finished.
