BANGALORE, FEB. 6. The State Government has hardened its stand against the naxalite problem. This is evident from Sunday's incident in Chikmagalur district in which two suspected naxalites were killed in an encounter with the police. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who was till now saying that the naxalite problem was a soci-economic one, on Sunday made it clear that the Government cannot remain aloof if the naxalites attacked the people. The police will be used to protect the people against naxalite attacks, he said. The Special Task Force (STF) of the police will be strengthened with the posting of well-trained officers. Mr. Dharam Singh said he has convened a meeting of top police officers in the city to take stock of the situation. This is the second incident of killing of naxalites. In the first incident, two women were killed and some organisations had criticised the police. There is criticism of the Government's decision to deploy the STF that was raised to deal with the Veerappan menace against the naxalites.
