JAMMU, FEB. 6. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, has said that restoring the State's autonomy will remain the main political slogan for the National Conference. At a party function here today, Dr. Abdullah said: "We maintain a consistent stand that the restoration of autonomy to the State remains an important step towards meeting the genuine urges and aspirations of the State's people." Turning to the ongoing civic polls, Dr. Abdullah alleged that the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) had taken the help of militants to ensure the victory of its candidates. "The PDP adopted various tactics in the first two phases of the civic elections to ensure victory of its candidates, including indirect support of militants." The NC president, Omar Abdullah, charged State Ministers with violating the model code of conduct during the first two phases of the civic elections. On the autonomy issue, he said his party could have an understanding with the Congress on the lines of the Indira Gandhi-Sheikh Abdullah accord of 1975 which paved the way for Sheikh Abdullah to assume power in the State.
