By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, FEB. 6. A team of 27 police personnel, headed by a deputy superintendent of police, shot dead two naxalites in an encounter at Kallugudde forest area of Menasinahadya village in Koppa taluk of Chikmagalur district early today.

Highly placed sources said that some naxalites were injured in the exchange of fire. Srinidhi, Circle Inspector, Kudremukh area, and Satish Nayak, constable, were also injured. Mr. Srinidhi was rushed to the hospital, where he is recovering.

Unable to face the well-equipped police team, the other naxalites fled from the scene.

On receipt of information about the encounter, the Superintendent of Police, Chikmagalur, B.K. Singh, rushed to the spot with additional forces, and the Additional Director-General of Police, (Law and Order), Subhash Bharani, flew to Mangalore on the instructions of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh. Speaking to The Hindu from Menasinahadya, Mr. Bharani said that one of the dead naxalites has been identified as Prem, who was said to be the secretary of the Karnataka State Committee of People's War. The identity of the other person is yet to be established.

`STF not involved'

Denying reports about the involvement of the Special Task Force in the operation, Mr. Bharani said it was the 27-member police team, headed by N.T. Shivakumar, that encountered the naxalites.
