A walk for a cause

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 6. Celebrities from different walks of life assembled at the sprawling Lodi Gardens in the Capital on a cold Sunday afternoon for a noble "cause". And an equally enthusiastic crowd turned up to catch a glimpse of its favourite stars.

The brainchild of the former cricketer and president of the non-government organisation "Khushii", Kapil Dev, the mass walk dubbed "Light for Life" was to generate funds for the relief and rehabilitation of the tsunami victims. Flagged off by the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, it saw the participation of politicians such as the Delhi Power Minister, Haroon Yusuf, and young Members of Parliament, Sachin Pilot and Naveen Jindal.

There was plenty of commotion and jostling as celebrities, especially actor Jackie Shroff, joined the show. Mr. Shroff was the cynosure of all eyes and just about everyone tried to mob him. He barely walked for 15 minutes before driving away.

Earlier, Mr. Shroff expressed the hope that the money generated would be spent for the rehabilitation of the victims of the "terrible waves", while actress Nagma said the walk was to create awareness about the tragedy.

Later, addressing the gathering at The Claridges hotel — where small children had rendered a moving song to empathise with the tsunami victims — Kapil Dev said: "I cannot measure the success or failure of this event. The cause for which people have assembled is more important. It was an emotional walk and I am happy that Delhiites took some responsibility. We are here to support a tragedy in which children have lost their parents. I have seen some really heart-wrenching pictures of the catastrophe and I plan to do something for the victims in Tamil Nadu."
