BANTWAL, FEB. 6. Kannada is not just a language. It is a reflection of the land, the community, its history and culture, civilisation and other systems of life, the President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Chandrashekar Patil, has said. He was inaugurating the 11th Bantwal Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Akshara Nagar, Vishnumurthy Temple premises, here on Saturday. Literature knew no barriers of caste, creed or religion nor has any impediments cast because of these factors, he said. The light of literature should be truly lit in all human minds overcoming barriers of caste and religion and various conflicts that these factors bring about. Literature had the power to unite all sections of society.
`Understand the message'
He said it was up to people to understand the inherent message in works of literature and assimilate them in their daily lives to make the world a better place. Referring to the activities of the parishat, Mr. Patil said he would continue the schemes initiated by the parishat's former President, Harikrishna Punnaroor. In addition, Mr. Patil announced that he would start a "Pustaka Santhe" in Bangalore on Saturdays as well as take up distribution and publication of books at the district level to give greater fillip to the reading process. Mr. Punnaroor, who released a souvenir, said irrespective of the medium of instruction in which children received their education, they should not forget Kannada.
`Promote Kannada'
He also urged the concerned to take steps to promote Kannada as primary language in the State. "With cooperation from all sections of society, we can certainly bring about this change,'' he said. In his presidential address, poet-writer, Amshumali, said literature should be able to bring about consciousness in individuals transcending barriers of caste, creed and religion. It should grow on its own without the support of any extraneous consideration, he pointed out. The president of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the parishat, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, hoisted the Kannada flag. The Bantwal MLA, B. Nagaraj Shetty, spoke. The president of Sri Kshetra Pangalpady Jeernodhara Samiti, K. Lakshminarayana Udupi, flagged off a procession. The former president of the Sammelan, Ganga Padekal, and office-bearers of the parishat were present.
