Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, FEB. 7. The leader of the Opposition in the Pondicherry Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman (DMK), has called upon the Rangasamy Government to raise the compensation for the tsunami-hit farmers in Pondicherry and Karaikal. In a release here today, Mr. Janakiraman said the financial assistance of Rs. 3,750 per hectare was insufficient as farmers would not be able to reclaim the land and desalinate it. More than 700 hectares had been lost in the two regions. He wanted to know what steps the administration had taken to relieve the farmers of their sufferings. The relief packages including 10 kg free rice was not available to farmers and farm labourers.
