TIRUNELVELI, FEB. 7 . As many as 313 women self-help groups in coastal hamlets of the district, which were affected by the recent tsunami, were given loans of Rs.1.56 crores with 50 per cent subsidy as economic assistance. After the natural calamity struck the district, the Collector, Atul Anand, held a meeting with bankers on December 27 to finalise the mode of assistance to be given to the SHGs in the affected villages. Based on the grading done by the Project Officer of the District Rural Development Agency, P. Ponniah, and his team, the economic assistance of Rs. 50,000 each was given to the SHGs. Of the Rs.1.56 crores the Pandyan Grama Bank gave Rs.91.50 lakhs to 183 SHGs while the Canara Bank and Indian Overseas Bank gave Rs.46.50 lakhs and Rs.13.50 lakhs respectively to 120 SHGs. The State Bank of India and the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank are the other two banks, which released credits to be distributed in the loan melas held at Idinthakarai and Kooththankuzhi on Sunday. Distributing loans to the SHGs, the Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagenndran, said the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, was so keen on constructing walls on the seashore from Chennai to Kanyakumari to protect the precious life of fishermen and their belongings. "In a bid to revive the almost grounded life of fishermen, the Government has distributed Rs.1.23 crore at Kooththankuzhi while Idinthakarai received Rs.1.36 crore to purchase new boats, catamarans and fishnets. Moreover, efforts are in the advanced stage to construct 630 houses for Kooththankuzhi fishermen who lost their houses in the catastrophe," Mr. Nagendran said. The Collector, the DRDA Project Officer, P. Ponniah, the Lead District Manager, S. Nambiraj, the Assistant General Manager, NABARD, K. Sridharan, the Assistant General Manager, Canara Bank, Ravi Ramachandran and others participated in the loan distribution functions.
