TIRUNELVELI, FEB. 7. Vigilant public averted a tragedy at a manned level crossing at Kulavanigarpuram here this evening, by stopping the Tiruchendur - Tirunelveli passenger, after the gatekeeper, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, failed to close it. Railway sources told The Hindu that the gatekeeper did not close the gate for the train, which crosses the point at 5.30 p.m. daily. On seeing the train fast approaching, the public and traders nearby ran for a distance and stopped the train. The engine driver rushed into the gatekeeper's room to see him fast asleep.
