ANANTAPUR, FEB. 7. The Minister for Panchayat Raj, J.C. Speaking at an awareness meeting for para-workers appointed for the CLDP here, he said about 5.5 lakh acres of land was assigned to the poor since independence in the district and not even 10 per cent of it was being cultivated even now.

The Rs. 500-crore Indira Prabha was conceived to develop such lands and provide a livelihood to those who were allotted such lands.

First phase

In the first phase about 9,500 acres of land would be developed in the district, he stated. The district Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, said 184 blocks in 165 villages were identified for the first phase. Two para-workers would work for each block. Works worth Rs. 12 crores would be taken up under land development.

About Rs. 15 lakhs was spent on the scheme so far and they were planning to spend about Rs. 1.5 crores by the year-end.
