MANGALORE, FEB. 7. The State Government is taking all steps to effectively handle the naxalite problem in the Western Ghats region, including working proactively to give the required policy support, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has said. Speaking to presspersons on his arrival at Bajpe Airport here on Monday, Mr. Dharam Singh said he had suggested the establishment of a special directorate, which would be constituted soon, for taking up welfare measures for the tribal people in the region. The directorate was the outcome of brainstorming with the Deputy Commissioners concerned and the Development Commissioner, Chiranjeev Singh. He said there was no move to deploy the Special Task Force (STF). There was also no plan to altogether prevent the STF from dealing with the naxalite problem. When asked why there was a delay in handing over the body of the slain naxalite Saketh Rajan, alias Prem, to his family in Mysore, Mr. Dharam Singh said his family had refused to claim the body. Mr. Dharam Singh later left by road for Dharmasthala.
Constable recovering
A police constable, who was injured in the encounter with the naxalites in Chikmagalur district on Sunday, is recovering at a hospital here. Doctors removed two bullets from A.M. Satish's thighs last night after he was brought here. He is out of danger, according to the police.
