J&K civic polls record 81 p.c. turnout

JAMMU, FEB. 7 . The fourth phase of civic polls in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a voter turnout of 81 per cent, despite the inclement weather. A record number of 969 candidates, including 306 women, are in the fray for constituting 11 municipal bodies in Jammu district and six in Kathua district.

Polling was held in 197 wards, which have an electorate of 1.99 lakhs. As per the results declared till this evening, the Congress party was ahead, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Of of the results declared for 128 wards, the Congress got 52, the BJP 33,the People Democratic Party 20 and the National Conference nine.

Independents managed to get 10. ThePanthers Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party bagged two each.

The fourth phase of civic polls recorded an unusually high turnout with the Jammu district recording 84 per cent and the Kathua district 77 per cent.The Congress got a setback when it lost to the BJP for the Basolhi municipal committee, stronghold of the Congress MP, Lal Singh.

The BJP won 11 out of 13 seats whereas the Congress managed only two.
