Prosecution witness turns hostile in Best Bakery case
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI,
FEB. 7.
Jyotsna Bhat, a prosecution witness, turned hostile today as she refused to corroborate her statement to the Vadodara police after the riots of March 2002, during the re-trial of the Best Bakery case here at the court of additional sessions judge, Abhay Thipsay.
Ms. Bhat, who lives opposite the Best Bakery in Baroda, said that on the night of March 1, 2002, she did hear a mob coming towards the Bakery shouting "Maro, Jala do" but she had gone inside the house and closed the door.
In the morning, she said, the neighbourhood was empty. She did not corroborate her statement made to the Vadodara court during the trial held there in 2003. She had stated that she had seen the Bakery workers being assaulted and their hands being tied up in the morning.
