THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 7. Kottayam Medical College Hospital would soon get a Rs. 4.25-crore incinerator as part of the efforts to protect the hospital and its environs from fresh outbreak of diseases such as jaundice, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, told the Assembly today. Intervening in the reply to an Opposition-sponsored adjournment motion, the Chief Minister said the general manager of the Hospital Services Corporation of India had held discussions with the hospital authorities regarding the project proposal. The Government has already given in principle clearance for the project. It will be given all necessary clearances once the project report is ready, he added. Mr. Chandy said the number of jaundice cases being reported from the area had come down from 121 cases a week in September to just six in the last week of January. The disease is now under control. The Government has not, however, lowered its vigil. A sum of Rs.45 lakhs has been sanctioned for repair of the existing incinerator at the hospital and steps were on for making water from the Aymenem water supply scheme available in the hospital and nearby areas, he said. Earlier, the Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, said the disease had so far claimed nine lives, including six in Kottayam and one each in Thrissur, Alappuzha and Kasaragod. Altogether 1,300 jaundice cases have been reported so far. Discussions were being held with health authorities in all affected districts for taking remedial measures, he said. Seeking leave for the adjournment motion, the CPI(M) deputy legislature party leader, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, accused the Minister of having under-reported the total number of deaths due the jaundice outbreak. He cited newspaper reports to the effect that as many as 50 persons have died so far on account of jaundice. Unless the Government took firm action, the situation would go out of control, he said.
