meeting

KOTTAYAM FEB. 7. The 11th Hindumatha Sammelan at Meenadom Sri Bhagavathy Temple will commence on Tuesday. The sammelan will be opened by Swamy Vedananda Saraswathy of Geethananda Ashram at Peruva.

Metal detectors at Guruvayur

THRISSUR FEB. 7. The police have installed metal detectors at the Sri Krishna Temple here as part of the measures to tighten the security measures of the temple.

According to police sources, one of the metal detectors has been installed at the Kizhakke Nada, second at the Padinjare Nada and the third one at the entry point for the people for the Prasada Oottu (temple feast). Additional police reinforcements have also been deployed at the temple town. The police are also doing vehicle checks rigorously in the town. The Devaswom had earlier decided to install the metal detectors on its own. But now that the police have already installed them, the Devaswom will replace them at a later date.

Duplicate SSLC book

THIRUVANTHAPURAM Feb. 7. The Government has issued an order doing away with the need for a gazette notification before issuing a duplicate SSLC book, as well as simplifying the procedure involved, according to an official pressnote. Instead of a gazette notification, the applicant should advertise the loss of the book in any one of four newspapers with the largest circulation in the State. The cutting of the advertisement should be submitted with the application. A certificate authenticated by a First Class Judicial Magistrate/ RDO/ District Magistrate saying that the book has been irrecoverably lost, should also be submitted. The application should be routed through the head of the school where the student studied.

President's medal

P.E.K. Kannan, Head Constable of the CISF unit attached to the LPSC of the Indian Space Research Organisation at Valiamala has been selected for the President's police medal. A native of Kannur district, he has also served in the security wing of the Indian diplomatic missions abroad.

Recruitment cancelled

The recruitment programme for selecting 30 constables/ drivers to be held at the CRPF Group Centre at Pallippuram in Thiruvananthpuaram district on February 14 and 15 has been cancelled due to administrative reasons. P.G.G. Nair, Additional DIG, said today that the fresh date of the recruitment would be announced later.

Best practice award

The Clean Kerala Mission has invited information about the disposal of solid waste at the home, institution and community levels for the best practice awards to be given by it. The information should cover description, technical and economic details and picture. The details are to be sent to the Mission's office, Corporation Building, Thiruvananthapuram so as to reach it before February 28. Tsunami damage: talks held

A delegation from the World Bank-Asian Development Bank-United Nations Development Programme held discussions on the damage caused by the tsunami with the Chief Secretary, Babu Jacob. The Secretaries of various departments explained the loss in different sectors and the money required for reconstruction.

Elected chairman

L.S. Kylas has been elected chairman of the Indian Institute of Valuers, Kerala. The other office-bearers are S. Chandrasekharan Nair, vice-chairman; G. Viswanathan, secretary; M. Krishnan, joint- secretary and R. Ramesh Chandran, treasurer.

Congress(S) leader to join NCP

KOCHI FEB. 7. The Karshaka Congress(S) State president, Ambat George, has announced that he will join the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after resigning from the Congress (Secular). Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. George said that he was disillusioned with the leadership of Ramachandran Kadannappally as the party had not been able to gain the status of even a local party. He said that the UDF rule in the State was disappointing to people from all walks of life

Award for Kamal Haasan

The A.T. Kovoor National Award, instituted by the Bharathiya Yukthivadi Sangham for comprehensive contribution towards secular and humane activities, will be given to the film personality Kamal Haasan. Addressing a press conference here today, the judging committee member Sreeni Pattathanam said that the actor was selected for the award as he had proclaimed himself as a rationalist, atheist, activist and follower of Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy. The award will be presented by the Kerala High Court Judge M. Ramachandran here on February 16.

Change in flight schedule

Nedumbassery FEB. 7. Air-India flight, AI 962/935, bound for Dubai from the Cochin International Airport will be operated on a different schedule tomorrow. The flight from Jeddah via Kozhikode will arrive here at 9.15 p.m. and will leave for Dubai after one hour. The passengers bound for Dubai are required to report at the airport by 6.35 p.m. As per the usual schedule, the flight arrives here at 10.35 a.m. and leaves at 1.30 p.m.

CPI(M) panel invites applications

KOLLAM Feb. 7. The Kollam district committee of the CPI(M) has invited applications from those from economically weak sections in the district who performed well in last year's SSLC examinations. The applications, being considered for this year's N. Sreedharan Memorial Endowment, should reach K.B. Ajayakumar, Office Secretary, CPI(M) District Committee office, Kollam-21, by February 15.

`Sarpabali' ritual

Brahmashri P.S. Sreedharan Namboodiri and Brahmashri Vishnu Namboodiri will lead a `sarpabali' ritual at the Paripally Kodimoottil Sri Bhadrakali Temple at 7 p.m. on February 17, the secretary of the temple committee, S. Prashobhan, has said in a statement.

Annual offering

The 183rd annual offering of the Kollurvila Muslim Jama-Ath in the city will be held from February 9 to 13.

The president of the Jama-Ath committee, A. Yunus Kunju, will hoist the flag on February 9. The rituals will conclude at 5 p.m. on February 13 with a conference to be addressed by Mathur Sheikh.

`Id sangamam' inaugurated

The Rajya Sabha Member, N.K. Premachandran, today inaugurated `Id sangamam' of the Kollam taluk unit of Muslim Education Society (MES). The function was presided over by the MES president, Anzar Rahim. Guitarist A.S. Khan and the television and mimicry artiste Jayanath were honoured. The MES secretary, Abdul Lathif, and other MES office-bearers, Jonakapuram Thahakutty, Majid, Abdul Salam and Moideenkutty spoke.
