remanded

KURNOOL: Seven activists of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were remanded to custody here on Monday in connection with rioting following the murder of Paritala Ravi on January 24, under the Two Town police station limits. The accused produced in court for causing damage to public property were identified as -- Venkateswaramma, Chandra, Srinivasulu, Gopal, Madhusudarshan, Bhaskar and Ravikumar.

Old student to be felicitated

KURNOOL: Santhiramudu, Chairman of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Institutions at Nandyal, who is an old student of Government Degree College here, will be felicitated on February 9. The Principal, R. Venkateswara Reddy, invited old students to attend the function.

Rally by Youth Congress

KURNOOL: Activists of the Youth Congress organised a demonstration here on Monday to protest against the inclusion of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy's name in the FIR pertaining to Paritala Ravi's murder. They said Jaganmohan Reddy who had no role in the death of the MLA was implicated under pressure from the Opposition.

Protest by LIC staff

CUDDAPAH: Employees of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) staged demonstrations before the divisional and branch offices here on Monday, opposing a 12 per cent wage revision offered by the LIC management. The Centre was interfering in wage revision causing further delay as LIC lacked functional autonomy, the LIC Employees Union divisional general secretary, B.V.S. Raju, alleged. He sought a reasonable wage revision, lest employee unions would launch agitations.

Beneficiary selections

NELLORE: The selection of beneficiaries pertaining to Swarna Jayanti Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), in AS Pet mandal, will be held on February 8 and February 9. The selection is through gram sabhas in the presence of officials concerned.

BSNL cell phone facility

NELLORE: Subscribers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Sangam area will soon have the cell phone facility. The BSNL authorities have taken up necessary work in this regard.

Naxals occupy Government land

ADILABAD: Activists of the Communist Party of India (ML) New Democracy on Monday occupied 18 acres of Government land at Luxettipet mandal by pitching party flags. The land is situated in Andhra Bore village. According to reports reaching here, the land was allotted to non-gazetted officers.

Seven naxalites surrender

KARIMNAGAR: Disillusioned with party ideology and ill-health, three CPI(ML) Janashakti naxalites surrendered to the Sircilla police on Monday while a Janashakti and two Maoist members surrendered before the Medak SP, D.S. Chouhan, at Sangareddy. According to the Sircilla CI, Md. Razzak Khan, T. Srinivas alias Ashok of Bheemgal forest dalam in Nizamabad district, N. Ramulu and Ch. Bheeraiah of Manair dalam had surrendered. They were involved in the beating of Basvapur and Chinalingapur sarpanches for not cooperating in the construction of martyrs memorial in Jillela village.Mr. Chouhan said the Manjeera dalam member, Boini Yadgiri (28), who was security guard for the State committee member, Amar, during the peace talks, Mudike Kanakaiah (20) of Kangal village and Ambala Swamy (18) had given up. Another naxallite, Y. Venkateswarlu of Bhavanasi dalam special guerrilla squad, surrendered before V.R.K. Mohan Rao, SP, at Kurnool.

Fishermen back in the business

NELLORE: After a gap of 42 days, fishermen of Mypadu, Indukurupet and other areas ventured into the sea on Sunday. Due to tsunami on December 26, 218 boats were damaged and 348 nets went missing. Eleven persons had lost lives. There was a lot of uncertainty over resumption of fishing. But fishing resumed after `Ganga pooja' on the shore. It was a royal welcome for fishermen who came back with their catch. Most of fishermen repaired boats and nets on their own before venturing into the sea.

`Implement Punnaiah panel report'

NALGONDA: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that the Government implement the Punnaiah Commission report without further delay. In a resolution passed at the State conference at Ravi Narayana Reddy Nagar here on Monday, the party alleged that the Government lacked sincerity in implementing the recommendations of the commission, which according to the party, had been "appointed in response to prolonged agitations.'' In another resolution, the conference demanded revival of industries that had been closed by previous Governments.

Youth's suicide drives

parents to end lives

NIZAMABAD: Agonised by their son's suicide a few days ago, Ch. Narasimha Reddy (48) and his wife, Sumeela (40) of Venkampally under Tandur gram panchayat, committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Monday. Javed Jaffer, CI, said Ramesh (18), lone son of the couple, ended his life by consuming poison. Since then, the couple was suffering from mental depression. Unable to bear it, Reddy and his wife took the extreme step at their home after their daughter went to the college, the police said.

Couple's bid to commit suicide

KURNOOL: In a suicide pact two lovers attempted suicide at Nandyal on Sunday night. According to reports, Nagaraju (18) and Nagaratnamma (16) who had fallen in love planned to marry but their elders opposed the marriage on the ground that their castes were different. Dejected by the opposition, the couple consumed poison. Nagaraju died while the girl was battling for life at a hospital.

Technical education results out

HYDERABAD: Results of the entrance examination for admission to correspondence diploma courses have been placed on the website of the State Board of Technical Education and Training, www.sbtet.ap.ac.in. Rank cards of the candidates are being despatched to the candidates' postal address.

A press releases issued on Monday said candidates could approach Principals of Government polytechnic for results. It said they should watch out for admission notification in newspapers.

Selected for youth award

HYDERABAD: Rendla Kalinga Shekhar of Kondannapalli village in Karimnagar district has been selected for the National Youth Award 2003-04. A communication to this effect was received by him from the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. He has been asked to get in touch with the Commissioner of Youth Services, Secunderabad, G. Nageshwar Rao, on February 19. The award, comprising a cash prize of Rs.25,000, a citation and a memento, will be presented here on February 21.

SCR promotee officers' protest

HYDERABAD: Members of the SCR Promotee Officers' Association in the zonal/divisional headquarters on Monday wore black badges. V.R. Patre, president, and E. Sukumaran, general secretary, said in a statement that the association had sent a memorandum listing the demands to the Railway Minister, the Railway Board Chairman and the SCR General Manager.

Their demands were reversing the `arbitrary' reduction of senior scale posts on account of cadre upgradation in group `A,' `illogical' cadre fixation (720 posts in junior scale instead of 2,000), etc.

AITUC backs Central staff stir

HYDERABAD: The AITUC State Council has decided to support the week-long Central Government employees' agitation for settlement of 12-point charter of demands. It has directed district units to support the dharna to be at all district headquarters on February 11. In a statement here on Monday, T. Narasimhan, secretary, called upon the Centre to convene the joint consultative machinery to discuss the issue.

Dry weather likely

Hyderabad: There was isolated rain in Telangana on Monday while weather was mainly dry in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Nizamabad recorded a rainfall of 2 cm. The lowest temperature of 15 degree Celsius was recorded by Arogyavaram. Dry weather is likely to prevail on Tuesday.
