Girijan Sangham for re-survey of lands

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 7. The Andhra Pradesh Girijan Sangham has demanded a re-survey of lands, identification of additional Government lands and their distribution to the landless poor.

Addressing a media conference, the Bhadrachalam MP, M. Babu Rao, and the APGS State secretariat member and Naguru MLA, K. Lakshmana Murthy, said that contrary to the claims made by the State Government of distributing 1 lakh acres of land to the poor on Republic Day, no new patta was distributed, but only passbooks issued to those who were already in possession of lands in tribal areas.

YSR flayed

Flaying the Government's attitude, they demanded a re-survey of the available lands. Mr. Babu Rao criticised the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for not giving the former a report, even two months after he had sought it, on the villages to be submerged by the Polavaram project and the measures being taken for rehabilitation of the displaced persons.

He said that a number of tribal hamlets and forestland in East and West Godavari districts would be submerged by the project.

The MP said that the tribal population in the nine districts between Srikakulam and Adilabad districts was five million. Unfortunately, the bureaucrats of these districts were unable to concentrate on the implementation of 1/70 Act, which was meant for the protection of tribal lands.

He demanded formation of two special tribal districts with headquarters at Bhadrachalam and Utnoor (Adilabad district). He also sought that the AP Forest Development Corporation (APFDC) procure coffee cherries from the Girijans of Visakhapatnam agency at Rs.72 a kg. as announced by the Government. They were now being paid a maximum of Rs.40 per kg. on the plea of a slump in the market.
