Kozhikode, Kannur vie for honours

KOZHIKODE, FEB. 7 . As results came in of 24 stage and non-stage contests at the Higher Secondary Schools Youth Festival here on the second day today, Kozhikode district was in the lead with 137 points. Kannur district followed close behind with 128 points. Ernakulam district was in the third slot scoring 121 points. Thiruvananthapuram got 94 points. Palakkad district bagged 86 points.

As many as 3,000 students from higher secondary schools in the State are participating in the HSS festival, scheduled to conclude on February 9.

It was a day of music and dance at the different venues today. At the main venue at the Model Government HSS, competitions were conducted in patriotic song, Bharatanatyam (boys and girls), and oppana.

Classical music and kuchipudi contests for girls and boys were conducted at the New Nalanda Auditorium.

At the Town Hall, another venue, contests were held in `kolkkali', `arabanamuttu', `daffmuttu' and `mohiniyattom.'

The venue at BEM GHSS witnessed competitions in `mappilappattu', light song, group song and `vrindavadyam'. Instrumental music contests were held on two stages at the B.Ed. Training College.

For the test of literary talents, the competitions held in non-stage items included story writing in Malayalam, English, and Hindi. A contest in cartooning was also held.

The following are some of the prize winners (first and second) in the 24 results declared so far.

Bharatanatyam (girls): Juna Mary Avirachan (St.Ann's GHSS, Kottayam) and V.M. Sneha (MES HSS, Mannarkkad); S. Revathi (Mount Carmel HSS, Kottayam) and Vijayatha Vijay (Sri Bhuvaneswari EM HSS, Mannar, Alappuzha).

Classical music (boys): S. Suraj (GB HSS, Thycaud); V. Vaishak Somnath (MSP HSS, Malappuram).

Cartoon: P.S. Ninu (GBHSS, Kunnamkulam); K.R. Anuraj (Tagore Memorial HSS, Vellora, Kannur).

Mappilappattu: K.P. Saleej (GHSS, Muzhappilangad, Kannur); E.V. Suhail (Himayathul Islam HSS, Kozhikode).

Wind Eastern Flute: A. Vishnu Vijay (GB HSS, Thycaud); G. Prahaladan (CKBM HSS, Pudupariyaram).

Patriotic songs: Vidhya S. Iyer (MKNM HSS, Kuamaramangalam, Idukki); R. Sruthi (Durga HSS, Kanhangad, Kasaragod).
