PATHNAMTHITTA, FEB. 7. The Nair Service Society (NSS) has said that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will collapse if the Oommen Chandy Government continues its policy of appeasing the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and other `minority-oriented' coalition partners. Talking to presspersons at Pandalam today, the NSS assistant secretary and spokesman, G. Sukumaran Nair, alleged that the ruling UDF was succumbing to the `pressure tactics' of the IUML just for the sake of completing its term. The `interests' of the IUML should not be mistaken as the `interests' of the Muslim community in general, he said adding that the tie-up between the NSS and the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam is not against any particular community. The NSS and the SNDP are opposing the `self-centred' politics of the IUML and it should not be misinterpreted as anti-Muslim, he said. He said the `soft stand' being adopted by UDF MLAs in the Assembly towards the IUML demand for the immediate implementation of the recommendations of the Narendran Commission report was a testimony to the Chandy Government's `tactics' to stick to power at any cost.
Karunakaran remark
Mr. Sukumaran Nair said there were reports that the senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran had criticised the NSS and the SNDP for joining hands against the social injustice being perpetuated by national parties such as the Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party just to assume power. Mr. Karunakaran himself had reportedly claimed that it was he who had taken the initiative to enlist Muslims as a backward community. This amply exposes his `political opportunism,' he said. The NSS spokesman said a meeting of NSS `karayogam' leaders at Perunna on January 22 had discussed the Society's tie-up with the SNDP in detail and the response was overwhelming. The NSS director board will this month constitute a high-level committee to hold joint discussions with the SNDP on various topics pertaining to the two communities. A joint committee will chalk out the future course of action.
