BELLARY, FEB. 7. Members of the Tungabhadra Grameena Bank Employees' Union and Officers' Association staged a dharna in front of the bank's head office here today demanding promotions to those appointed under workmen cadre and revision of halting allowance as done by Canara Bank. The agitation was held under the banner of coordination-cum joint action committee of the union and association. Ganapathi Hegde, convenor of the committee, said in a press release that though 80 per cent of employees in the workmen cadre have to retire without promotions, the bank is not taking steps to give them time-bound promotions. He said that promotions were given two times after 1998 when promotion rules were announced. Referring to the halting allowance, he said it was revised twice in commercial banks and other grameena banks. It is one of the listed benefits and should have been revised as per the Union Government's guidelines. But Canara Bank, which sponsors the grameena bank, did not allow the revision of allowance, Mr. Ganapathi Hegde alleged. The members will stage a dharna on February 25 in front of regional rural banks sponsored by Canara Bank and in front of the Canara Bank's head office in Bangalore on March 1 demanding need-based manpower policy, promotions to all cadres, extension of all benefits to staff of regional rural banks on a par with the employees and officers of Canara Bank, Mr. Ganapathi Hegde said.
