THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 7. The eighth State Vocational Higher Secondary School Youth Festival got off to a colourful start at the Government Girls' VHS School, at Manacud in the city this evening. Inaugurating the three day-festival, the Minister for Education, E. T. Mohammed Basheer, said that from the next academic year, youth festivals and teachers' training programmes would be advanced to avoid inconveniences being caused to students and teachers. It has been found that holding of such events towards the fag end of an academic year, especially with the examinations round the corner, was causing problems of sorts and hence the proposal. The Government was also contemplating a comprehensive revision of the youth festival manual with a view to rectifying the anomalies experienced on past occasions. The proliferation of appeals and the increase in complaints pertaining to the decisions of the judges have necessitated such a revision. The issue needs to be addressed in an effort to set things right, the Minister said.
Workshop
A workshop on the revision of youth festival manual would be held in Thiruvananthapuram, with the involvement of students, including the winners of `kalathilakam' and `kalaprathibha' titles, teachers, artists, especially those who have served as judges, officials and legal experts. The views expressed by them would be taken into consideration while modifying the manual, Mr. Basheer said. It has also been proposed to rectify the shortcomings in the vocational higher secondary system. Certain courses were to be modified with emphasis on imparting practical knowledge to students. He claimed that the grading system introduced in Kerala has been widely acclaimed by the other States as well.
Medals given away
The Minister also distributed medals to the toppers in the Vocational Higher Secondary examinations of March 2004 and released the State Youth Festival Souvenir, in this connection. The Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, J. Chandra, presided over the inaugural function. A. Neelalohithadasan Nadar, MLA., offered felicitations. Director, VHSE, Sajith Vijayaraghavan, welcomed the gathering and A. Mydeenkunju, convener, organising committee, proposed vote of thanks. Heralding the festival, a pageantry was held on the main thoroughfare in the city, from the SMVHS School to the venue at Manacaud. Over 2, 000 students from 375 vocational higher secondary schools in different parts of the State, who had excelled at the district level youth festivals, are taking part in the competitions.
