Act now
There is always traffic jam during peak hours and repeated complaints from the public and the media have fallen on deaf ears. The Highways Department has added fuel to the fire by digging up pits and filling them with loose red soil. We, a group of healthcare professionals, find it extremely difficult to reach the hospital in time during an emergency. We would be grateful if some action is taken. Dr. S. Krishna Kishor, Coimbatore.
Furnish proof
Several of our members and well-wishers brought to our notice a message that appeared in The Hindu dated December 28, titled `Public nuisance' by Shri K.K. Rajavel. This letter, especially appearing in your reputed newspaper, has given us great shock and challenged our reputation. We examined the letter and understood that we are not involved in the maintenance of public convenience opposite the Thadagam bus stop on Thadagam Main Road. Or for that matter, in any other part in our district now or even earlier. While we appreciate the writer's interest in environmental aspects, we request him to furnish available proof or details (as written in his letter) so that that particular public convenience is handed over to Exnora or to individuals. T.S. Jayakumar, Executive Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Exnora, Coimbatore.
Family card cancellation
As I was away on a visit, I could not cancel the H marking by the last date, which I understand was 31.12.2004. I recently learnt that cards not presented for H removal have been cancelled. Since the card is needed for identification at various places, I request that arrangements may kindly be made to revalidate/renew such cards particularly since we are not drawing any rations. A.N. Lakshmanan, Coimbatore.
Plight of senior citizens
They were asked to stand in the queue for more than 4 to 5 hours only to be said that their name was not in the list. The filled in applications were in fact acknowledged and verification was done with the address given in the application! The address of most of the cards was illegible. Heavy amounts were spent for autos to go to the Taluk Office only to a negative reply. Proper guidance was absent, and officers were not available. When contacted on phone, people were asked to come to office and at office discourteous replies were given. I suggest that officers of high ranks are available. Applications and family cards should be handled by experienced hands. Various centres should be available area-wise and complaint numbers should be given. Weekly review meetings should also be held. V. Balasubramaniam, Coimbatore.
Memorable concert
Such munificence was her mission. M.S. was a frequent visitor to Coimbatore. One of her concerts here, about half a century back, remains fresh in my memories. Smt M.S. was to give a concert at the Puranthara Dasar festival in R.S. Puram. The then Chief Justice of Madras High Court, P.V. Rajamannar, inaugurated the festival. The judges of the local courts were also present. Everyone expected Justice Rajamannar to leave a few minutes after the inauguration. But being a great lover of Carnatic music, he sat through the entire concert. A. Ranganathan, Coimbatore.
Defacement of walls
But the farthest end near the unnumbered eighth gate and to some extent on the road (a blind corner) leading to `Scientists Home' of the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, bills and commercial advertisers freely deface the wall. There are even sign boards obstructing the other side view. But, even the security men/women of the campus posted seem helpless in the matter. Perhaps, the warnings at the University bus stops 1 and 2 are not clearly visible. The researchers and executives, who happen to cross that warning signs frequently, too have not taken serious note of these. Will the university authorities remove the poster and take action against this offence on this stretch by giving effect to their warning at least now? K.K. Rajavel, Coimbatore.
Securing admission
While the actual admission takes place about a week or two from the date of supply of application forms, the distribution of uniforms and study materials takes place at a later date. Instead of conducting the whole affair in such a staggered manner, the authorities could do well to make the entire process more simplified. The children who are confronted with questions beyond their grasp are also subjected to tremendous stress/pressure during the interview. Questions that seek to judge the communicative abilities of children to bring out their inherent skills and making them feel at home would be more beneficial. B. Suresh Kumar, Coimbatore.
