KOCHI, FEB 7. `Village on Wheels', the special train introduced by the Indian Railways in November, arrived in Kochi this morning with 300 passengers. The nine-bogey train was arranged by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a public-sector undertaking of the Railways. On board were 150 members of a Jain social group from Malad and Goregaon, Maharashtra. The others came from different parts of Maharashtra. Most passengers are senior citizens.
Tour circuit
The chartered tour circuit started off from Mumbai. The train, with new coaches (fitted with centralised music system), arrived in Kochi after covering Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore and Ooty. From here, the train left for Tirupati, from where it will go to Hyderabad and later return to Mumbai, ending the 12-day package tour. In Kochi, the group visited the Jain temple and Dutch Palace at Mattancherry, St. Francis CSI Church and Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi and the Hill Palace Museum, Thripunithura. They also went on a backwater cruise. The General Manager of Kumar Tours and Travels, which organised the tour, Rajesh Jodhani, said that only high-end tourists can afford trains such as the Palace on Wheels and Royal Orient.
Economy-class
"The Village on Wheels has come to the rescue of economy-class people, he pointed out. The 12-day tour costs Rs. 4,850 per head, inclusive of food and road transport. A 62-member crew, consisting of chefs, security guards and cleaners, are accompanying the passengers," he said.
