Four beaten up on charge of Banamati
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
FEB. 7.
At least four residents of Mirzaguda in Chevella on the city outskirts, who were accused of practising `Banamati' (witchcraft), were thrashed by villagers on Sunday. Six villagers, who started behaving hysterically, were admitted to Chevella Government Hospital.
According to the Ranga Reddy district SP, E. Damodar, some villagers went into a state of "trance" complaining that some persons had practised Banamati on them. The locals then held four villagers allegedly responsible for this and thrashed them. However, the four escaped and took shelter in the police station.
"On Sunday, when the condition of six persons went out of control and they started behaving hysterically, we got them admitted to Government hospital," Mr. Damodar said.
He informed that in consultation with Collectorate authorities, a team of psychiatrists would be called from Hyderabad on Tuesday to examine those admitted in the hospital.
Four of the patients were identified as Shyamamma, Yadamma, Durgamma and Kistaiah.
No one was arrested in this connection so far, Mr. Damodar said.
