BANGALORE, FEB. 8. The Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, V.B. Coutinho, on Tuesday expressed concern that there is no administrative machinery to address the needs of peri-urban areas in the country. He was speaking on the concept of peri-urban interface at the workshop on "Peri-urban: A bridge for rural urban partnerships,' organised by the St. Joseph's College of Business Administration here. Stressing the need for a multi-disciplinary approach towards addressing peri-urban issues, Dr. Coutinho said it is unfortunate that no efforts have been made to look into the peri-urban issues in the past. "These areas have not been explored and no development work has been carried out there. In the existing set up, we have schemes to eradicate poverty in urban and rural areas but not in peri-urban areas," he added. The Urban Development Secretary, Ravi Kumar, said that there was not much information on peri-urban poverty. He said there was a need for concentrated efforts on addressing peri-urban issues. Papers on "The peri-urban interface: An engine for innovation," "Spatial access to livelihood needs of poor households in peri-urban Delhi," "Dynamics of poverty and alternative livelihood options in the peri-urban interface," "Trends in land use in the peri-urban areas" and "Opportunities and constraints of sewage irrigation by peri-urban farmers" were presented. The Archbishop Emeritus, Ignatius Pinto, inaugurated the event. The Director of St Joseph's College of Business Administration, Aveline R. D'Souza; the Director of Best Practices Foundation, Sangeetha Purushothaman; the Managing Director of the State Bank of Mysore, Vijayanand; and the College Dean, Edwin Castelino, spoke.
