Polls in Dharwad taluk put off

DHARWADHUBLIMANGALOREMANIPALGULBARGA, FEB. 8.FEB. 8.FEB. 8 Elections to all the 37 gram panchayats in Dharwad taluk have been postponed by a week, according to a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner here today. The postponement has been made in view of the local festivals taking place at Garag and Tadakod villages. Accordingly, instead of February 27, the polls will now take place on March 6. In all other panchayats of Dharwad district, the elections will be held as schedule, with the exception of Begur in Kalghatgi taluk, Gurnalli of Kundgol taluk, Yamanur and Kalwad of Navalgund taluk, the notification added.

Campus interviews

DHARWADHUBLIMANGALOREMANIPALGULBARGA, FEB. 8.FEB. 8.FEB. 8 The B.V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, is coordinating the campus interviews for Tata Consultancy Services Limited, Bangalore, on February 12 for candidates from north Karnataka who passed out in 2004 with the following disciplines: BE, B. Tech, ME, M. Tech, (Computer Science, Information Science, Production, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, EEE, ECE Instrumentation, Electrical Electronics, Telecom), M.Sc. (Computer Science, Information Science, IT, S/W), MCA (with BCA BBM, B.Sc/B.Com, BA with Maths only/ MS (fulltime)/MBA with IT & System with Engineering background only). The selection process, according to a press release, involves an aptitude test for the duration of two hours. Candidates are requested to register their names personally at the Placement Cell, BVB College of Engineering and Technology Hubli with two sets of resume, and two photos. The candidates should have scored 60 per cent marks in X, XI, XII, Degree and Masters respectively, and should not have any backlogs. For further information, contact Prof. A.S. Plea not to wind up KFDC

DHARWADHUBLIMANGALOREMANIPALGULBARGA, FEB. 8.FEB. 8.FEB. 8 The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) Employees' Union has appealed to the State Government not to wind up the corporation. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the president of the union, K. Sadashiva Shetty, said the Government should rejuvenate the corporation by granting funds. It has released funds to the corporation for the past 15 years, he said. The corporation has to recover Rs. 3 crores from fresh fish sellers and boat owners. This has affected the upgradation works. The Government should take steps to recover the amount, he said. The employees are not getting their salaries salary for some months, he added.

Symposium on radiation biology

DHARWADHUBLIMANGALOREMANIPALGULBARGA, FEB. 8.FEB. 8.FEB. 8 P.C. Kesavan, Professor of DAE-Homi Bhabha Chair, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, on Tuesday said that atomic energy should be used for peaceful purposes rather than destructive ones. He was presiding over a symposium on Radiation Biology and Cancer, organised by the British Council, TIFAC-CORE and MAHE, here. Prof. Kesavan said radiation biology has been used in fields such as agriculture. The Green Revolution in the country has benefited from this field. Radiation Biology has tremendous potential in the field of healthcare. S. Gurumadhva Rao, Registrar of MAHE, welcomed the gathering. R.S.P. Rao, Dean of Kasturba Medical College, gave an overview of the symposium. H.S. Ballal, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, inaugurated the symposium. M.S. Vidyasagar proposed a vote of thanks. Trevor McMillan of Lancaster University, was present.

Open house quiz

DHARWADHUBLIMANGALOREMANIPALGULBARGA, FEB. 8.FEB. 8.FEB. 8 The District Science Centre will conduct an open house quiz for students and general public on the topic "Inventors-Inventions and Discoveries" on February 11 at the Centre as part of the "World Inventors' Day," which is also the birth anniversary of Thomas Alva Edison.
