SALEM, FEB. 8. Sustained raids round the year against the traders who tended to adopt "unfair'' trade practices with regard to measures and packaging in the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Erode and Krishnagiri, have realised a revenue of Rs 14.74 lakhs towards fines for the period between January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2004. The intense action, which according to the Salem Region's Deputy Commissioner of Labour, N. V. Thayumanavar, had not only yielded the revenue but also played an effective deterrent role against the recurrence of such "unfair'' trade practices in future in these districts in the Salem Region. Official teams split into various groups under the guidance of the Inspectors of Labour and Deputy Inspectors maintained constant raids against those who indulged in unfair practices of using sub standard measures and stocking packaged items against the provisions of The Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules 1977. To ensure good quality service to the consumers and to enforce the acts strictly, the officials had raided 17,336 business establishments, 2,135 fair price shops, 1,525 petrol bunks, 1,719 diesel bunks and 52 kerosene outlets in Salem district during last year and of which 1,661 business establishments, 451 fair price shops, 22 petrol bunks, 26 diesel bunks and three kerosene outlets were found to have many "contradictions" to the provisions of the act. A sum of Rs. 4.46 lakhs was collected as fines. A total of 10,206 shops and trade establishments and 1,254 fair price shops were inspected in Namakkal district. A sum of Rs. 1.54 lakhs also had been collected towards fines. In Erode district, the officials found out a total of 1,127 shops, 256 fair price shops and a few petrol and diesel bunks indulging in unfair trade practices.
Raids in Dharmapuri
The raids in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts yielded revenue of Rs. 2.94 lakhs. A sum of Rs. 14.74 lakhs was collected from the violators from these districts.
