Letters to the Editor
Sir, I do not agree that self-financing colleges are largely to blame for the state of unemployment among graduates with professional qualifications (Letters, Feb. 8). If everyone decides to be a job-seeker, who will provide jobs? Engineers and doctors should think in terms of self-employment. Also, it is the individual who is responsible for shaping his or her destiny. It does not matter whether he or she passes out of an IIT, REC or a self-financing institution.
S. Balaji,
* * * Sir, About 20 years ago, some of us veterinarians had the opportunity to interact with a British vet in formulating a World Bank-assisted livestock development project. He was shocked at the cafeteria-like approach in the opening of and admission to veterinary colleges in India. He said in jest that soon vets would be truck drivers. In Tamil Nadu alone, there are over 1000 vets who are without employment or gainful self-employment. In many countries, professional bodies project manpower requirements from time to time and their recommendations are strictly adhered to for admission to professional schools. Maybe India should also follow the practice.
T.N. Varadarajan,
