Sir, — This refers to the article, "Evolution takes a backseat" (Feb. 5). The growing reluctance to accept the theory of evolution is partly due to the rise of the "Intelligent Design" movement, which poses a serious scientific challenge to evolution.

It demonstrates the inability of evolutionary mechanism to account for the unimaginably complex design exhibited at the microbiological level.
