Congress workers gherao Poojary

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, FEB. 8. A section of the Shimoga District Congress Committee (DCC) workers gheraoed the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, here on Tuesday demanding the reconstitution of the DCC.

The party workers rushed to the Circuit House, where Mr. Poojary is staying, to express their ire over the delay in reconstituting the DCC. It delayed his arrival by over two hours at the party workers' meeting scheduled to be held at 10.30 a.m.

The workers said they will not allow him to leave the place till he concedes their demand. They said the DCC cannot be expected to give a better account of itself under the presidency of Mir Azeez Ahmed, and demanded that he be replaced immediately in the larger interest of the party.

At this stage, the demonstrators who were joined by some Youth Congress workers, surrounded Mr. Poojary at his room and later squatted there.

This prompted Mr. Poojary to sit on the ground along with them to listen to their woes.

Mr. Poojary said the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, has asked him not to make any changes in the party committees until the panchayat elections are over. "Your demand will be fulfilled as soon as the panchayat elections are completed," he said.

But this did not pacify the demonstrators who continued slogan shouting. An enraged Mr. Poojary threatened to sack them from the party if they did not end their protest.

The party workers dared him to take action against them if he is confident that he can strengthen the party by that.

The demonstrators continued their protest even after Mr. Poojary got into his car to proceed to the party workers' meeting.

Some workers expressed their displeasure over the show-cause notice issued to senior party worker, Arakere Lokeshappa.

Mr. Poojary assured them that he will look into the matter.
