SHIMOGA Feb. 8. Mir Azeez, Shimoga District Congress Committee president and MLC, said here on Monday that the party workers will win more than 75 per cent of the gram panchayat seats in the district. He told presspersons here on Monday that the previous S.M. Krishna Government has enhanced the annual grant to each gram panchayat to Rs. 5 lakhs while the present coalition Government brought the distribution of drinking water under the purview of gram panchayats and this has turned the trend in favour of the Congress. Mr. Ahmed said the Congress won 23 seats in the elections to the Legislative Council held in 2003. This shows that more than 80 per cent of the candidates who won in the previous gram panchayat elections belonged to the Congress. He said the former Minister, Kagodu Thimmappa, will spearhead the party's campaign in Shimoga district. The selection of candidates has been left to the respective block committees of the party.
