Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, FEB. 8. The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy, said here on Tuesday that if India is in a position to emerge as a powerful nation it is because of its efforts to preserve and protect democratic values. Mr. Shankaramurthy was inaugurating the district-level "mock parliament" organised jointly for the high school children by the Department of Public Instruction, the zilla panchayat, and the Shimoga Jaycees. He said the rapid changes in political scenario were possible in India because the Constitution guarantees them right to vote and thus elect the Government of their choice. It is because of India's inherent strength that it could tackle the tragedy of the dimension of tsunami without seeking help from any other country. The students should realise that their political system is the best in the world. He lauded the efforts made to enlighten students as to how Parliamentary system of government works by holding the "Mock Parliament" and said it will go a long way in helping students understand the administrative structure. Sri Prasannanath Swamiji of the local branch of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt said education should be imparted in such a way that it helps enrich the Indian culture and tradition. K.S. Eshwarappa, Shimoga MLA, who presided over the function, said people should be enlightened about the value of their votes so that the poll related malpractice can be eliminated. The Jaycee Senator and National Trainer, S.V. Sastry, conducted the "mock parliament". The Deputy Director of Public Instruction, S.L. Chauvan; the President of the Shimoga Jaycees, S.L. Lakshmikanth; the Subject Inspector, A.S. Hanuman; and the Joint Trainer, Shyamala Sastry, were present.
