Tariq Anwar granted protection from arrest
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI,
FEB. 8.
The Delhi High Court today granted protection from arrest to Tariq Anwar, one of the general secretaries of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), in a case of causing damage to government properties by pasting posters and putting his party flags on government buildings at the time of the 1999 Lok Sabha elections at Katihar in Bihar. Justice Manju Goel was ruling on a petition seeking anticipatory bail in the case. A First Class Magistrate of Katihar Bihar has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.
He alleged that the warrant had been issued to prevent him from participating in the campaign for the ongoing Assembly elections in the State.
He wanted direction to the State police not to arrest him till March 1. Ms. Justice Goel asked him to appear before the court concerned during the protection period.
The State Police have charged Mr. Anwar with violating Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act with his supporters and workers allegedly pasting posters and putting flags of the party. He submitted that he was not aware of the violation of the Act by his workers.
