She did not appear in the court today as summoned, and the case was adjourned to February 21 to enable the defence receive instructions from one of the accused, Sangita Prasad, whose trial was separated last year after she was diagnosed as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. On March 3, 2002, Bilkis who was five months pregnant and 16 others reached Chapparwad village in Dahod district of Gujarat, when an armed mob attacked them. She was gang-raped along with other women in the group. Eight persons were killed and six missing. Only Bilkis and two others survived the attack. Defence counsel Gopal Singh Solanki said now Dr. Prasad was declared fit to undergo the trial and charges against her were framed on February 5. He said it was important to receive instructions from Dr. Prasad before starting the trial, as she was the doctor who examined Bilkis after the sexual assault. Charges against the other 19 accused were already framed last month. R. K. Shah, the special public prosecutor, said the Supreme Court had ruled that all rape cases must be held in camera and this was no exception. Even the name of the victim must not be mentioned publicly. He said he had not made any application for Bilkis to testify in camera as the Supreme Court had made a provision. Mr. Shah said all the evidence connected with Bilkis would also be recorded in-camera.
