Thanjavur
By Our Staff Reporter
THANJAVUR, FEB.8 . The Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, today stressed the need to use iodised salt. Inaugurating an awareness camp at Municipal Middle School at Karanthai near here, he said that iodine was essential for the development of brain. Though vegetables and fruits remain a source of idoine, the content is slowly coming down in vegetables and fruits as soil has lost its iodine content. So iodine is given in a cost efficient way through common salt. The people have to spend only Rs. two more to get the precious idodine in a month. He asked the teachers to test the salt brought by students from their houses twice a month. Under this scheme, 3.4 lakh children in Thanjavur district would be benefited. He asked A. Ganesan, Deputy Director of Health, to take action against those shops, which do not sell iodised salt. P. Rajendran, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, P. Ramaraj, Chief Educational Officer, Adiyapatham, District Educational Officer, Santhanam, Commissioner, Thanjavur Municipality, and K. Buvanasundaralakshmi, Headmistress, participated in the meeting.
